Twenty-One

JOLIE

The person reflected in the mirror is me, but not the me that I recognize. It’s like all my flaws have been photoshopped out. My hair is lush and shiny, my skin smooth and flawless. Though my eyes are dark, they look haunted and full of secrets.

I look beautiful.

And deadly.

I look like a monster.

Shuddering at the troubling image, I turn away before I can get a closer look. I climb into the shower, flipping the lever until the water is scalding. I scrub at my skin as if I can remove what I’ve become. The scars I collected from Dafoe have faded, only faint lines of the grisly ordeal remain, and I’m not sure I appreciate having the evidence of what they did to me gone.

My skin is glowing red when I finally turn off the shower and step out. Without the wolves near, my skin cools and my heart rate slows almost to a stop. I’ve always been fine with being alone, but now I suddenly find myself missing them.

A set of clothes is waiting for me, including a warm, fluffy towel, and some of my shock fades. I avoid looking at the mirror as I dress. I’m adjusting to my new way of life, but my brain can only take so much at once.

The shower allowed me time to think, which is a dangerous thing. Dark memories linger at the back of my mind, but I refuse to let them haunt me any longer. If the wolves taught me anything, it’s that I want to live, and I can’t do that while stuck in the past.

It’s progress.

I step out of the bathroom, and the dark thoughts of my past vanish when I find Castle and Tobias waiting. They both straighten to attention, pushing away from the wall they were leaning against. Their intense gaze is focused on me like the rest of the world doesn’t exist.

Both men stalk closer, towering over my petite form. The sheer size of them should intimidate me, but it’s like my body knows they’re mine, and I shiver when I remember how they so easily brought me to pleasure over and over.

I soon find myself surrounded, each of them pressing in closer until I’m sandwiched between them. Tobias is in front of me, and I relax against his massive chest, settling against him with a sigh. Castle doesn’t hesitate to snuggle against my back, not the least put off by me touching another man.

I melt at their closeness, tiredness hitting me hard all of a sudden, and my eyes flutter closed. With them touching me, I feel safe.

Protected.

Loved and adored.

Instead of questioning it, I just accept it. After the hell I survived, I deserve happiness. I snuggle closer to Tobias, smiling when he kisses the top of my head. I reach back toward Castle, needing to feel him close, and my hand settles on his hip, staking my claim. He leans down and nuzzles my neck.

A little growl rumbles from his chest, and my nipples instantly harden.
